Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao are a collaborative duo whose work explores play and craft across a range of media. They have been collaborating since 2011. Together the pair also operate a small design studio called CHIAOZZA and a guest room called A Cabin in a Loft. For independent work, see Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao.
Our collaborative practice explores the intersections of the natural world and the imagined world through sculpture, installation, drawing, and photography. Our work questions the familiar and the strange, inspired by cultural phenomena such as the cultivation of plants, the production and use of tools, and the inhabitation of domestic space. We use Play to manipulate and shift the perception of such instinctive human activities into a realm that brings to light the wondrous, the magical, and the humorous in the everyday.
In our project Paper Plants, we build paper mache sculptures of fictional plants that draw from the seemingly supernatural qualities of real plants in the physical world. The manipulation of color, form, surface, and structure of our paper plants parallel the meticulous cultivation of living plants by horticulturalists. Through this process of creation and cultivation, we examine and participate in the innate desire to control and beautify “the wild.”
Another project, CHIAOZZA, aestheticizes the language of utility in the construction of hanging, geometric wall sculptures. The painted slatted wood sculptures use simple joinery and are crafted with Japanese handsaws. Originally inspired by a kitsch Danish folk object, our evolution of this domestic icon embraces and continues the knowledge and aesthetic practice from otherwise lost or distant traditions.
By working across multiple disciplines, our practice questions the construction of our everyday lives and imagines alternative worlds.
